Chapter 8: Terms Broken

I broke the kiss first, with my hands still knotted in his shirt.

"Your terms," I said, breathing hard. "In private, nobody touches me. Not even you."

"I know what I said."

"You said it very clearly. Twice. And then you said you'd have wanted the one you were promised."

His eyes closed.

"I was a coward in that truck."

"You were cruel."

"Yes." He opened them. "I said the worst thing I could think of, because you'd just put your hand on my leg, and I wanted to put you on the dashboard."

I stared at him.

"Then which is it?" My voice shook. "Do you want me or not?"

"I want you so badly I can't see straight."

He said it flatly, and he did not look away.

"When you walked down that aisle, I couldn't see your face. But I breathed in, and my wolf stopped dead in my chest. That's how I knew it wasn't Rosalie. She'd been standing in my hall twice, and I never felt a thing."

My mouth had gone dry.

"I thought you only bit me to save the treaty."

"I bit you because I couldn't stand to let anyone else."

He touched his thumb to the corner of my mouth, where he had touched it in the truck.

"Tell me to take you home, Tilda, and I will."

"Take me home," I said, and watched his face go dark.

"To your rooms," I said. "Your bed. All of it."

He made a sound I felt in my ribs.

He drove back faster than he should have, with his right hand on my thigh the entire way, and neither of us said a word.

He got me through the lodge and up three flights of stairs, and he shut the door and put me against it.

His mouth came down on mine.

I tasted salt and winter air, and I pulled his coat off his shoulders and shoved it to the floor.
