Chapter 13: The Moon Trial

They didn't walk me to the ring. They dragged me.

Two guards held my arms, and the silver studs from the cell had left a ring of red welts on my wrists.

The courtyard was lit with lamps and full of people.

The moon sat over the roof of the pack house, round and white and enormous.

Three hundred wolves turned to watch me come, and not one of them said my name.

"Bring her to the stones," the old elder called.

The ring was the wide circle of flat gray stones where the pack sparred and where, for as long as anyone remembered, the she-wolves had run the Moon Trial.

Odette already stood in the center of it.

She wore silver, the same gown as the night of the Count, and her arm was bound in clean white linen from wrist to elbow.

She was glowing.

It rolled off her skin in waves, so bright the front rows squinted and lifted their hands.

I knew exactly what it was.

It was mine, and it was pouring out of her for the last time before it had to come home.

"Where is the Alpha?" I said.

"Standing at the edge," said the elder, "where the law puts him. He may watch. He may not speak."

I found Finlay in the crowd.

Two members of the Council held him back by the sleeves, and his hands were wrapped in gauze where the silver had eaten them.
