Chapter 12: The Test
The chair declared a recess because nobody in the room could think of anything else to do.
Audrey was already on the phone.
Ten minutes later, a nurse practitioner in navy scrubs came down the aisle with a small black bag.
"This is who I said," Audrey told me. "She does the pregnancy tests for Ames Row's staff clinic. It's a urine test. It takes a few minutes."
"Good."
We set up in the side room, with the door open and half the press peering in.
Brianna stood in the middle of the stage with her arms folded over her cream dress.
"I'm not doing it."
"It's a simple test," I said.
"I won't be treated like a criminal."
"You came to a shareholders' meeting and told four hundred people and a row of cameras that you're pregnant." I kept my tone mild. "I'm asking you to prove it in a private room."
"I don't owe you that."
"Then you can tell everyone here it's a mistake."
Her eyes went to my father.
Gerald had sat down at the opposite table.
His face was gray, and he said nothing.
"Brianna," Nicholas said.
He had stood up in the second row.
His voice was quiet, but it cut across the whole room.
"Take the test."
"Nicholas, please."
"If you're carrying my child, I'll stand beside you. I'll pay for everything, and I won't walk away." He took a breath. "But I want to know it's true. And I want it done today."
"You don't believe me?"
"I believe you lied to the dean."
A murmur ran through the seats.
"You told me you were on the pill," Nicholas said. "You told me that in August. In September you wrote that you hadn't slept with anyone else. You've told a great many things to a great many people."
"I haven't lied about this!"
"Then it costs you five minutes."
