Chapter 13: Ballot

The helicopter put us on the 47th-floor terrace at ten to nine.

Weston had not said a word since the Hamptons, and I had not asked him one.

I had the ring on my finger and a ballot with my name on it, and I wanted to hear him say why that was bad.

He wouldn't.

"Delaney," he said, as the rotors wound down. "Whatever happens in that room."

"Yes?"

"Don't."

I took off my headset and set it on the seat.

"You've said that word to me four times," I said. "You've never once finished the sentence."

I walked into the building ahead of him.

The boardroom had a long glass table and nine chairs, and eight of them were full.

Leland sat at the head, in the chair that was supposed to be Weston's father's, with a plate of croissants in front of him.

"There she is," he said, and stood up. "Our general counsel."

"Not yet," I said.

"A formality."

He pulled out the chair beside his own and waited, smiling, until I sat.

Weston took the chair at the far end.

He did not look at the croissants, and he did not look at me.

Leland called the meeting to order in his warm, unhurried voice.

He read the motion himself: that the board appoint Delaney Cross general counsel of Stratton & Co., effective today, with the salary and the seat that came with it.

"Seconded," said a woman halfway down the table, who had known my name for exactly one week.

"Any discussion?"

Weston stood up.
