Chapter 6: Tea With the Chairwoman

The chairwoman's hotel sent a car for me at three, and it was for me alone.

Her suite was on the top floor, with a tea table set by the window and rain running down the glass.

She sat with her back very straight and her interpreter on a stool beside her, and she poured my tea herself.

"Madam says to sit," the interpreter said.

I sat.

"She has read the newspaper," he said. "She asks why it calls you an assistant."

"Because the newspaper is wrong," I said. "I'm his lawyer."

The interpreter translated.

The chairwoman raised one eyebrow and said something.

"A lawyer who kisses her client at dinner," the interpreter said. "Madam says she approves. She says a lawyer is the only woman who has read everything he signed."

I laughed, and I did not mean to.

She watched me over the rim of her cup.

"Madam asks what you want," the interpreter said.

"From the deal?"

"From him."

The room was quiet, and the rain made a soft sound on the glass.

I could have told her the plan. I could have said ninety days, signature, thank you.

"A job I earned," I said instead. "I want my name on it because it's mine."

She nodded slowly.

Then she spoke for a long time, slowly.

"Madam says her husband was a hard man to love," the interpreter said. "He never once said it aloud. For thirty years she watched for the things he did instead."
