Chapter 14: What She Paid
Cassian's POV
The water showed me a white hall, and I knew it.
It was the Hall of the Light, the night before they read me my sentence.
I had never seen it from the inside.
They had kept me in a cell below the Hall, and I had only heard the footsteps overhead.
Rook stood at the center of the floor in his pale robe.
"Unmaking," he said.
His voice came up out of the lake clear and gentle, and Linnet's hand shook in mine.
"That is what the court will give him at dawn. His name struck from every ledger, and the rest of him after it."
The woman in the water stood before him in a plain gray dress.
Her wings were still on her back, long and white, and the light from the high windows lay across them.
I had forgotten how wide they were.
"You can stop it," the Linnet in the water said. "You told me that once, in the garden."
"I told you what I could do if the price were right."
"Name it."
Rook smiled.
"Your wings," he said. "I take them tonight, and you go down to the mortals, and you wear the Wane for seven years. At the end of the seventh, it takes the rest."
I heard a hoarse noise and realized I had made it.
Linnet did not look at me.
She kept her eyes on the water, and her grip on my hand did not loosen.
"His sentence," the Linnet in the water said.
"Seven years in the Abyss. He lives."
"No harm to either name. Say it."
"No harm to either name," Rook said. "Your word and his, as clean as they are tonight."
"And he never learns what I paid."
I stopped breathing.
It was a small voice, and a steady one.
