Chapter 13: Above the Shop
Gail wouldn't say another word in the Shore Point parking lot.
She stood beside her car with her arms crossed.
She looked at Silvio's Escalade.
"Not here," she said. "Not without him in the room, and not with Joyce crying in the window."
"Then say it at dinner."
"Sunday. My house, in Margate. One o'clock."
"Why would I come to dinner with you?"
"Because I'm your aunt," she said, and her voice finally cracked the rest of the way. "And because I'm tired of carrying it by myself, Deirdre. Come, and bring him."
She got into her car and drove off without waiting for an answer.
Silvio opened the passenger door of the Escalade for me, and I got in, and he got in behind the wheel.
"You're going to say yes," he said.
"I'm going to think about it."
"That's yes."
"That's me thinking about it."
He drove me home to the studio I rented on Brighton Avenue.
It was two blocks from the water, a third-floor walk-up.
Its radiator hissed.
I had my key out before he parked.
He didn't get out of the car.
"I can drop you at the door," he said. "I won't come up unless you say so."
I looked at him in the dashboard light.
I saw the grey streak over his temple and the set of his jaw.
Something in my chest gave way.
"Come up," I said. "And don't ask me what I want, Silvio. I'll tell you."
He came up the stairs two at a time behind me.
My studio was small and full of fabric.
Dress forms stood by the window, and bolts of cream silk were stacked against the wall.
I didn't turn on the overhead light.
I turned on the lamp by the sewing machine instead, and it threw a yellow circle across the floor.
