"The month after the tailgate," Amos said, "I rode up to the high country and told you it was for the cattle."
I turned on the pillow.
"It was for the cattle."
"It was for the cattle for about nine days."
He kept his eyes on the ceiling.
"I took a notebook and wrote you letters. I wrote forty of them."
"On the thirty-first day I rode down to the gate to say it."
"What happened?" I said.
"You were on the porch. A boy from Missoula was laughing at something you said."
My stomach dropped.
"Amos," I said.
"I turned the horse around. I burned the letters in the line shack stove that night."
"That was a boy who drove me home from a wedding," I said.
"I know that now."
"I'd have liked it if you'd stopped," I said.
