Chapter 19: Carol's Last Request

Wayne's POV

The night before the sale, Sage found me on the porch with a cup of coffee going cold in my hands.

She sat down beside me on the top step without a word and leaned her shoulder against mine.

The pasture was black. Somewhere out in it Cinder was calling, over and over, for a mare that wasn't coming.

"You haven't slept in two days," she said.

"I'm all right."

"You're not." She turned my cup in her fingers. "Tell me what you're scared of."

I was scared of a lot of things.

I told her the one that mattered.

"Your mother asked me for something," I said. "The week before she died."

Sage went quiet.

"She was too thin by then to lift the water glass. She took my hand, and she said, Wayne, look after her. Don't let her ride a horse she can't handle. Don't let her marry a man who's afraid of her."

Sage made a small sound.

"And then she said, Don't hand her off to anybody else, either."

I swallowed.

"I thought she meant a husband. I thought she meant some boy from town. I've spent two years believing the best way to keep my promise was to keep my hands off you."

"And now?"

"Now I think she meant exactly what she said." My voice cracked. "Stay. Look after you. Don't hand you to anyone."

Sage's eyes were wet. She took the cup out of my hands and set it on the boards.

"Then you're keeping your promise," she said. "You're looking after me."

"I fucked you on a truck hood."

She laughed, helpless, and wiped her face.
