Chapter 22: Fire Line
Wayne ran for the shed before Hank finished the sentence.
He came out with a logging chain and hooked it to Lyle's bumper without a word.
He hitched the other end to the tractor and dragged that truck off the cattle guard in four hard pulls.
"Hank, call it in," he said. "Everybody on the county road, I want every disc and every blade they own. Sage, with me."
I ran after him.
The south pasture was a mile of dry grass in April, and the wind was out of the west.
The fire had a front a hundred yards long by the time we reached the fence.
It crawled through the cheatgrass toward the creek, low and orange, spitting sparks at the sky.
Behind it lay the lower barn, the hay and the broodmare paddock.
"We can't stop it," I said.
"We don't stop it. We cut ahead of it." Wayne threw me a pair of leather gloves. "Take the tractor and the disc, and turn a strip of dirt along the fence line. Forty feet wide. Don't stop for anything."
"What about you?"
"I'll be on the line with Hank and the shovels."
He caught my chin in his hand for a second.
"Forty feet," he said. "Then you get out. Promise me."
"I promise."
By then the neighbors were coming.
They came in pickups with their headlights bouncing across the pasture.
Garner and Doyle and the hardware man came, and a dozen more, with discs on the back and wet burlap in the beds.
Dessa jumped off the tailgate of Hank's truck with a shovel and went straight to the fire.
I climbed onto the tractor.
The disc bit into the dry dirt and threw it in a long brown ribbon.
