Chapter 8: The Locksmith at First Light
Lyle Kenyon was already inside the feed store when I came around the corner at first light, and a locksmith's van was backed up to the door with its reverse lights still white.
The locksmith was kneeling on the concrete pad with a drill case open beside him.
"You're going to need to move that truck," he said. "I can't get the door clear."
"The store's open," I said. "It opens at six."
He tapped the paper taped inside his windshield without getting up.
I read it from where I stood. A work order, signed, dated yesterday.
"That's a day early," I said.
"It's what I was given," he said.
The feed store door swung out and Lyle came through it with the store's copy of the note under one arm and the sale book under the other.
He had a pen in his shirt pocket and his boots were clean.
"Morning, Sage," he said.
He reached out and took the claim form out of my hands before I had decided to let go of it.
My arms were empty. The gravel showed through the gap between my boots.
"Those aren't yours," I said.
"They're in my store," Lyle said. "Everything in that store is mine until noon."
Dessa came up beside me with her jacket half zipped. She stopped when she saw the van.
Lyle looked at her.
"That notary on the bottom of this form," he said. "She's going to be named alongside me, Dessa. Not called against me."
Dessa did not answer him. She took her phone out of her pocket and dialed.
