Chapter 15: The Door

Ward's POV

I got as far as the Boulder River bridge before I stopped the truck.

It was after midnight, and the road was empty both ways.

My duffel sat on the seat beside me with everything I owned in it, and that was not much.

I turned the engine off and sat with my hands on the wheel.

By morning every kitchen in the valley would be repeating it.

I had spent three weeks arranging for nobody to ever know what I'd given her, and she'd said it in a feed store.

What I could not get past was that she was right to.

I had been willing to be the villain in that room.

She wasn't willing to let me.

I got out and stood at the rail with the river loud under me.

Carrie had stood at a rail like this one the spring I came to the ranch.

She was twenty-six then, and I was twenty-four and had a duffel bag over my shoulder and no plan.

I thought about the last night, which I had never told anyone.

The hospice bed had been in the front room, by the window, because Carrie wanted to see the pasture.

Lulu was seventeen and hadn't slept in four days.

Around nine that night Carrie made me sit down, and she held my wrist with a hand that weighed nothing.

"Tonight's the night, Ward," she said. "I can tell."

"Carrie."

"Don't. Listen." Her voice was a thread. "Lulu's asleep in the chair. I want her to stay asleep with her hand in mine. I want that to be the last of it. Not you crying on her. Not a doctor. Not boots on the floor."

"You want me to leave the house."

"I want you to go to the barn and let her have me."

"She'll wake up and you'll be gone."
