Chapter 4: Supper at the Waggoner Place

Darrell Waggoner set a better table than anyone in the county.

His dining room had a long pine table, real china and a roast his housekeeper had been working on since noon.

He pulled out my chair himself.

"Sit by me, Lulu," he said. "Ward can have the end. He's used to being the one who watches."

Ward sat at the end and said nothing.

He'd put on a clean shirt and shaved, and I'd noticed every second of it from the truck.

We hadn't said a word to each other on the drive over.

Darrell poured wine for himself and me, and a glass of water for Ward without asking.

"Ward doesn't drink on a Saturday," Darrell told me. "Always the responsible one."

"I've got a mare to check at ten," Ward said.

"Of course you do."

Darrell smiled, and I could not find a single thing wrong with the smile.

He talked about the foal crop on his place, and the spring auction in Billings, and a stallion of his that had thrown a colt worth forty thousand dollars last year.

He asked about my mare charts.

He listened to the answers.

It was the first time anyone but Ward had asked me what I knew about the horses.

I liked him for it, and I felt a little guilty for liking him.

When the plates were cleared, Darrell leaned back in his chair and folded his hands.

"I'll say what I came to say," he said. "Ward, I want to buy your half of the Standifer place."

I turned my head.

"I'll pay more than it's worth," Darrell said. "A number with a lot of zeros. You'd be free to go anywhere. A man your age shouldn't be tied to a ranch that was his wife's."

"No," Ward said.
