Chapter 10: The Sixth Saturday

Joss's POV

The sixth Saturday was the last of the six, and I had not asked him about the drawings on his desk.

I'd thought about it every night.

Lise says the Marden girl. She'll come.

I told myself it meant what it said.

I told myself that was fine.

It wasn't, but the rope was already on the hook, and I wanted this night more than I wanted the answer.

Abram didn't speak when I came in.

He led me behind the curtain to the little room, where the lamp was on and a coil of red rope hung from a hook.

The bed had been moved to the middle of the floor.

"Dress off," he said. "Everything. Then stand."

I did.

He walked around me slowly.

He started at my wrists.

He wound the rope around them first, then up my forearms, knotting it every few inches, and drew my arms behind my back.

The rope came around my ribs and under my breasts, lifting them, and then over my shoulders and down.

Every pass of it pulled snug, and every knot was exact.

By the time he finished, I could barely move and I was shaking.

"How does it feel?" he asked.

"Like I can't get away."

"Do you want to?"

"No."

"Good."

He laid me on my back across the bed with my arms trapped under me and my breasts rising high in the red lines.

He stood at the foot and looked at me for a long time.

"This is what I wanted to see," he said, "the first night, in the doorway."

My thighs fell open on their own.

He took a white wand from the drawer, plugged it in, and thumbed it on.

It hummed in the quiet.
