Chapter 15: Everyone Has Seen It
By Monday morning I had four emails, and three of them ended the same way.
We're so sorry, but we're going to pause the commission for now.
Nobody said why.
The fourth was from the art director at the children's press where I'd drawn books for six years, asking if I could meet her for coffee at ten.
She was already at the table when I got there, with her phone face down beside her cup.
"I'm going to be straight with you," she said. "Someone sent our legal department a screenshot. Of a gallery post."
"Sheldon Deverill."
"I didn't say that."
"You don't have to."
She looked at me for a while.
"Is it true? That you go to a club?"
My hands wanted to go under the table.
I kept them where she could see them, flat on the wood.
"Yes," I said. "It's a private club, for adults. I'm twenty-nine. I go on Saturdays, and I like it, and it has nothing to do with the books I draw for you."
"Joss, the books are for seven-year-olds."
"The books are for seven-year-olds, and they're good. My Tuesday pages are in your inbox."
She was quiet for a long moment.
"I'll hold the commission for a week," she said. "That's all I can do."
"A week is fine."
It was a surprise to find I meant it.
Tanya was sitting on my front step when I got home.
She was still in her scrubs from the night shift, with a bag of bagels and her phone in her fist.
"A charge nurse showed me the post at four a.m.," she said. "She said, isn't that your shy friend?"
"What did you say?"
"I said you are the bravest person I know and she can kiss my entire ass."
