Chapter 22: Careful, Clean, Tidy
"That's enough," Sheldon said, and stepped toward the microphone.
Abram moved, too, and stood between them without touching either one.
Lise didn't look away from Sheldon.
"He told me the next morning it was a misunderstanding," she said. "He told the owner of the club the same thing. He said a night I'd regret. He said it in that voice, the one you all know."
Nobody in the room moved.
"He said it to Joss, too. He told her she has no appetite. She's careful, clean, tidy. That's his word for a woman who won't tell him no."
"This is a disgruntled employee," Sheldon said.
His voice was warm and wounded, and it carried perfectly.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm so sorry. Ms. Faraday was terminated from a private club for misconduct, and I have a letter from my lawyer."
"I wasn't terminated," Lise said. "I never left."
"Sheldon."
It was the man in the bow tie, the one Lise had served wine to.
He stood up from his table slowly, with his napkin still in his hand.
"I've been a member of the Night Press for six years," he said. "I was there the morning after, when Abram banned you. I saw her face."
"Sit down."
"No." The man put his napkin on the table. "I believe her."
A woman across the room stood up.
Then a young man by the pillar, and a couple at the back in matching black, and a woman who had kept her coat on.
One at a time, they got to their feet and said nothing.
I stopped counting at a dozen.
Sheldon stared at them.
"This is absurd," he said. "This is a witch hunt. These people are..."
