Chapter 11: Quino's POV

Quino's POV

I found her on the back stairs at two in the morning, sitting on the third step in my shirt.

It was the eighth night.

I had waited in the dark of the pool house for two hours with my boots on.

She had not come to the pool house.

She had come to the one place in the house that nobody used.

It was the narrow servants' stair behind the kitchen, with a single bulb burning at the top.

She looked up at me and put her chin on her knees.

I had worn that shirt on Tuesday.

She smelled of it.

"I thought you'd come," she said.

I said nothing.

I do not say much, and she knew it, and tonight she did not ask me to.

I stood at the bottom of the stair with my hands at my sides.

Ten years I held a car door for her.

Ten years I drove her father's daughter to school and to parties and to a grave, and I looked at the road.

I took the job at thirty-one because it paid for my mother's rent in Hialeah.

I kept it because of the mirror, and what was in it.

A driver does not touch the boss's daughter.

If he does, they say he wants the chair, and in this family they say it with a knife.

I did not want the chair.

I wanted her, and I had been taught my whole life that those were the same word to a man like me.

She stood and came down two steps and stopped, so that her face was level with mine.

"Say nothing," she said. "Just do what you want."

That was all.

I took her face in both my hands, and kissed her.

It was not a careful kiss.

She made a small sound and wrapped her arms around my neck.

I turned and put her back against the wall of the stairwell, and my mouth went to her throat.

She tasted of salt and sleep.

I pushed my shirt up over her head, and she lifted her arms for it.

She wore nothing under it.

I looked at her in the light of the single bulb for a long time.
