Nunzio came on Thursday at three in the afternoon, with his driver one step behind him and a leather folder under his arm.
I opened the door myself.
"Valentina," he said. "Cara. I won't stay long."
He walked past me into the front room and did not wait to be asked.
He sat in my father's armchair and set the folder on his knee.
The driver stayed in the hall with his hands crossed, and his eyes slid once over my shoulder to the stairs.
Dom, Rafa and Quino came down in a line.
I had not called them.
They had heard the doorbell, and they came down in their shirtsleeves and stood in the doorway of the front room without a word.
I felt them arrange themselves behind me.
Dom stood at my left, Rafa at my right, and Quino directly at my back.
"Sit, cara," Nunzio said. "This is a family matter."
"I'll stand."
