Chapter 23: The Licence

Seok-hyun asked to be heard before the chair voted.

The Director let him, because the Act said a petitioner might amend his petition until the vote.

It was Friday morning, the eleventh of December.

He had slept two hours on the bench in the lamp house with the tenth tag in his hand.

He had spent the rest of the night with the Ledger open and his father's exercise book on his knee.

The hall was as full as it had been the day before.

Nobody had brought a thermos, because nobody wanted to be the one who unscrewed it.

He stood in front of the plywood dais and looked at the five chairs.

The man in the pale suit had his eyes on the table.

The ember desk chief had a pencil in his fist and was breaking it slowly into two pieces.

"I want to say what I heard yesterday," Seok-hyun said, "and what I am going to change because of it."

"She said she wants to rest. I heard it, and I don't think anyone in this room can say I didn't."

"The Director asked her whether she wanted to be cleared, and she said no, except for one lamp. I counted that lamp, too."

A murmur went along the rows.

"I can't give her what the Director is offering. I won't do that, and I'll tell you why."

"The Pit is not something she is in. It's what she is doing," he said.

"If it's cleared, she stops, and she doesn't wake up to say whether she wanted to."
