Chapter 27: The Old Maps

The maps were drawn by hand on linen.

The first one the Director unrolled across the museum's glass case had a coffee ring over the town of Taebaek.

It was Monday the fourth of January, ten in the morning, and the hall was empty except for the three of them.

Seok-hyun stood on one side of the case with Da-hae at his shoulder.

The Director stood opposite, in his gray overcoat, weighing the corners with the bronze miner's lunch tin and three rolls of tape.

Under the glass, the cutaway model of Pit Nine lay in its white and red.

The blank at the end of the Number Four drift was still there.

"The Bureau drew these in the summer of 1991," the Director said, "when the government began to close the pits."

"A survey crew mapped every working in the Taebaek range before the shafts were filled."

"I was twenty-seven. I carried the tripod."

"This sheet is the original of the one under your glass," he went on, and tapped the case. "The Hwangji sheet."

"The other ten were never shown to the public."

He unrolled them one by one.

Each was a square of linen, a meter wide, with a pit drawn in black ink.

It showed the headframe, the shaft, the drifts in white and the faults in red.

On every one, at the bottom of the deepest drift, someone had drawn a small neat circle and written beside it a single word.
