Chapter 22: Fourteen Weeks
At fourteen weeks I finally had my mother over for dinner.
She had known for a month, because Glenda had sent her a check and a note.
She had spent that month being angry that I hadn't called her myself.
She came up Knox's narrow stairs in her good church coat, holding a covered dish, and she looked at everything.
The books, the one good pan, the man in the apron.
"You must be the brother," she said.
"The other brother," Knox said. "Yes, ma'am."
"I paid for half a caterer for the first one." She handed him the dish. "That's scalloped potatoes. They have cheese in them, so none for Willa. There's a second pan without."
"You made two pans."
"I'm her mother." She gave him a sharp look. "Why are you smiling?"
"It's a family habit, apparently," I said.
Bridget arrived at seven with a lemon pie and no apology, and the four of us sat at the little table with the three mismatched chairs and a borrowed fourth.
My mother had saved all her questions for the main course.
"Knox," she said. "What do you do?"
"I'm a paramedic. Nights, mostly."
"You were that other girl's husband's friend."
"Nicolette's husband. Yes. Mark."
"And you didn't tell my daughter to run?"
"I told his brother," Knox said evenly. "Twice. I should have told her once."
My mother looked at him for a long time.
"That's an honest answer," she said. "I didn't want one."
"I know."
"Don't be agreeable with me. It's a cheap way to win a woman's mother."
