Chapter 16: The Man from the Bar
He was standing at the glass reception desk with his hat in both hands.
I knew him before the elevator doors finished opening.
You don't forget a man you've hit.
He was bigger than I remembered, and his nose still listed to the left.
He wore a clean pearl-snap shirt and the same oversized rodeo buckle.
The crowd from thirty-eight had followed me down the hall, two hundred people breathing at my back.
Rhodes came behind me.
Rhoda came beside me, cracking her knuckles, which I had not known she could do.
"Ma'am," the man said, and looked at my boots. "Well. Look at you."
"Hello," I said.
"Heard you married up."
"Heard you came a long way for a Wednesday."
He looked at the people behind me, and the phones lifted one by one, and something in him sat down.
"I'm here to testify, is all," he said. "Friday, to the board. A lady flew me in."
