Chapter 18: The Vote
The boardroom on thirty-nine had a table the length of a bowling lane.
At five to nine, nine board members sat around it with water glasses and folders.
Rhodes sat at the foot with his hands flat on the wood.
Simone stood at the head, in a charcoal suit, with a slim remote and no notes.
She looked rested.
That frightened me more than anger would have.
I stood by the door in my smock, with the man from the bar's phone in my pocket.
"The motion before the board," Simone said, "is a vote of no confidence in the chief executive."

The doors opened behind me.
I had asked Rhoda for one thing.
She had given me thirty-one people.
They came in from the corridor in gray smocks, with their carts parked outside, and they stood along the walls.
The whole night crew.
Men and women who had cleaned this room every night for years and had never once been inside it with the lights on.
They did not say a word.
