Chapter 22: Eighth Avenue Again
On Sunday at a quarter to noon, Eighth Avenue looked exactly like it had on the worst night of my life.
It was cold and gray.
People were walking fast, with their heads down.
The deli was open.
The crack in the sidewalk still ran toward the curb.
Rhodes stood beside me in a charcoal coat and a clean shirt.
He had shaved.
He looked grim and pale.
"Do you know what this is?" he said.
"Your grandfather said bring you."
"He was very mysterious."
"He's seventy-nine. He's allowed."
Down the block, a wheelchair waited at the curb.
Amos sat in it in the old wool overcoat, the long one, with a plaid blanket over his knees.
He had a white scarf and his hospital bracelet, and he lifted one hand.
The nurse stood behind him, pretending not to be there.
Beside the chair, holding a large black umbrella, stood a woman in a green hat.
I stopped dead.
"Hello again," she said. "You left your duffel with me."
"You're the umbrella lady."
