Chapter 24: Morning Chores
I woke at five, because a ranch girl wakes at five on her wedding morning.
The stove had burned down to orange.
Light was coming gray and pink through the one window of the shack.
My husband lay on his back with one arm flung over his head, and one boot on.
I had the other.
I looked at him for a while.
He had a bite mark on his shoulder that was mine, and a scratch down his ribs that was also mine.
He had the face of a man who has finally stopped bracing.
I slid my hand down his stomach.
His eyes opened slowly.
"Mrs. Hargrove," he said, in a voice thick with sleep.
"Mr. Hargrove. It's chore time."
"It is not."
"It's five."
"I have a question," Rhodes said, "before a large decision."
"Ask it."
"May I put my mouth on you before the horses?"
"That," I said, "is a yes."
He pulled the quilt over both of our heads and went down my body.
I stifled a laugh and then I stopped laughing.
His mouth was warm and sure, and he took his time, with slow circles of his tongue.
