The ballroom of the Marquand held forty round tables and four hundred white roses.
Maribeth had placed every one of them herself.
She stood at the service door now in a black apron, giving me a thumbs-up with a pair of shears.
I wore the green dress.
It was the one Rafe had asked for, and the one Mitchell had asked for, and I had decided that tonight it was mine.
The head table sat on a low platform under a banner for the sale of Linden Homes.
Mitchell sat at its center in a midnight suit, with the buyer on his right.
The three oldest members of my father's board sat along the left.
The buyer's lawyer sat at the far end in the camel coat, as she had promised, with her briefcase between her feet.
Rafe stood at a side table below the platform with an open laptop, wearing a black jacket and a bright, pleasant face.
