"Close it," said the gallery owner, to no one and to everyone.

"The show is finished tonight. Please finish your drinks and go."

Nobody went.

Two hundred people stood where they were, with the television cameras turned toward the man in the black turtleneck.

Rafe laughed.

It was a good laugh, warm and unbothered, and I watched it fail on him.

"Please," he said to the room. "These women came to me of their own free will."

"Every one of them wanted to be photographed."

"Look at their faces on my wall, and tell me a coerced woman looks like that."

"I do," said the nurse. "That's the face I made when you said you'd send it to my hospital."

"You asked me to hold still," said the woman who taught piano.

"I did not ask you to film it."

A man near the champagne table said, loudly, "Jesus Christ."

Rafe turned toward him with his hands out, and found no friend there.

"Mr. Corbin," said the reporter, closing in with her microphone.
