Chapter 22: Mine
The front door closed behind us, and I shot the new deadbolt myself.
The click of it was the best sound I had heard in six years.
The hall was dark, and the house ticked around us, and for the first time it did not feel like anyone's but mine.
Ansel stood three feet away with my key still in his hand.
"Whose house is this?" he asked, very low.
"Mine."
"Say it again."
"It's mine," I said, "and you're in it."
He closed the distance in one step.
His hands came up into my hair.
He kissed me against the wall of my own front hall, hard enough that the framed photograph beside my head rattled.
I kissed him back.
I got his jacket off his shoulders and let it fall, and then I dragged his shirt up over his head.
The scar on his shoulder was pale in the dark.
I put my mouth on it.
He groaned and caught my hips and lifted me, and my legs locked around his waist.
"Where?" he said into my neck.
"The kitchen."
"The kitchen," he repeated, like a man hearing a joke he liked.
He carried me down the hall and set me on the cold granite island.
My husband had sliced a lemon on that island, and I felt the stone through my skirt.
"I'm taking this one back," I said.
"Then take it."
I pulled my sweater over my head and threw it at the stove.
He looked at my bra for a long moment.
Then he reached behind me and undid it with one thumb.
He bent and took my nipple in his mouth, and I arched back on my elbows, gasping at the light fixture.
