Chapter 19: The Hearing

The family courtroom in the Kent County courthouse was smaller than I'd pictured.

Wood paneling. Six rows of benches. A flag in the corner that needed ironing.

I sat at the left table with my lawyer, in the one navy dress I'd taken from the Reeds Lake house.

My father and Cullen sat in the first row behind me.

My father had worn a tie. I hadn't seen him in a tie since my mother's funeral.

Cullen had taken off every ring but the silver one.

"So I look less like a pirate," he'd said in the parking lot.

"You look exactly like a pirate."

"A pirate going to church."

Jarrod sat at the right table in a charcoal suit, with a lawyer who had very white teeth.

Kiersten sat in the row behind them, in white, with her new diamond on the hand she kept on the bench back.

Coby sat at the end of our row, next to a woman from the court who was there just for him.

He'd worn his only blazer. The sleeves were two inches too short.

Jarrod's lawyer went first.

He talked about the school in Connecticut and its rowing program.
