Chapter 23: The Bend

Nobody clapped.

Four hundred people sat there with their forks in the air.

Kiersten laughed, a bright little laugh, and reached for the microphone.

Coby turned his shoulder and kept it.

"She drew it when she was nineteen," he said. "In a green sketchbook. It was in our attic for ten years. In a box with her name on it."

"Okay, sweetie." Kiersten's smile was stuck on now. "That's enough."

"My dad put his name on it. Ms. Draper put hers on that one." He pointed at the gray chair. "They both know."

At the head table Jarrod stood up.

A white-haired woman beside him put her hand on his arm.

"Sit down, Jarrod," she said, not quietly. "I want to hear this."

She was the chair of his board. I'd sat next to her at six Christmas dinners.

Jarrod sat down.

Coby looked at me over four hundred heads.

He held the microphone out.

I walked.

The room parted for me, table by table.

My father and Cullen came behind me with the rocker between them.

At the stage steps I looked back at Cullen.
