Chapter 26: Sunday Dinner
On Sunday morning a rented white van pulled through our gate.
The camera sent me the picture while I was in the main shed, fairing frame sixteen.
Jarrod got out of the driver's side in jeans.
I had never seen him drive a van in my life.
Coby came down the stairs from the apartment and stopped on the gravel.
"Dad?"
"Your stuff," Jarrod said. "The rest of it. I figured you'd want it before school."
He opened the back doors.
Coby's rowing machine was strapped to the side wall.
His books. His winter coat. Two boxes marked COBY ROOM in Jarrod's square handwriting.
And on top, in a plastic tub, the model boats.
A tugboat with a cracked funnel. A sailboat with a paper sail. A little Chris-Craft with a stripe painted on crooked.
Coby built them with me at this yard when he was seven and eight, on my father's bench, on a stool.
I hadn't known Jarrod kept them.
Jarrod held out one more thing to me.
My mug. WORLD'S OKAYEST BOATBUILDER.
"It was in the cupboard," he said. "I thought you'd want it."
"I did. Thank you."
