Chapter 28: Sea Trial
My father had the pump hose over the side before Cullen finished the sentence.
"How fast?" I said.
"Faster than weeping. Slower than sinking." Cullen climbed out onto the dock. "She'll stay up while the pump runs."
"Where is it?"
"I can't see it from inside. It's behind the frames somewhere."
He pulled his T-shirt off over his head.
He kicked off his boots.
"What are you doing?" my father said.
"Twenty years, Arie. This is the only thing I'm actually certified for."
He went off the end of the dock in a clean dive and the Kalamazoo closed over him.
The seconds dragged out.
At a minute ten he came up beside her stern, blew water out of his nose, and went straight back down without a word.
My father had his hand flat on his chest.
"Dad."
"I'm fine. I'm watching my partner drown."
The second time Cullen came up at her bow, on the starboard side.
He hung on to the rub rail and pushed his wet hair back.
"Garboard seam," he said, out of breath. "Starboard. Right about at frame seven. I can put two fingers in it."
