I went down the outside stairs in my flannel and my socks.
Cullen was already at the gate.
He'd stayed over on the office cot again, because my father said the night before a show was a work night.
He stood on our side of the chain with his arms folded and didn't open it.
Jarrod got out of the Audi.
He wore jeans and a plain blue shirt, and he looked like he hadn't slept.
He held up both hands.
"I'm not coming in," he said. "I don't want to."
"Then what do you want?" I said.
"Coby texted me last night. He asked me to come to the show." He swallowed. "He said to come early, because he's crewing on the boat, and he wanted me to see her before the crowds."
"He didn't tell me."
"I think he wanted me to ask you."
Behind me the stairs creaked.
Coby came down in his crew hoodie, with a piece of toast in his mouth.
He stopped on the gravel and took the toast out.
"Hi, Dad."
"Hi."
They looked at each other across the chain.
Cullen looked at me.
I nodded.
He unhooked the gate.
Jarrod walked into the main shed behind his son and stopped dead in the doorway.
