Chapter 17: Her Pace
The minute was short, and most of it was Anthony pressing the recorder back into my wet hand.
"Give it to Edmund," he said. "Not the sheriff. Not yet."
"Why not the sheriff?"
"Because my mother's lawyer will have the deputy's chief on the phone before the car reaches the station."
"Anthony, I'm being arrested."
"For four hours," he said. "Five. I promise you."
He had never promised me a number before.
They held me in a small room at the county station until just after midnight.
I sat in my wet sweatshirt with a blanket and a paper cup of coffee that went cold.
The young deputy brought me a second blanket without saying anything.
At twelve-ten his sergeant came in.
Camille Ellingwood had been admitted for observation, he said, and she had declined to sign a complaint that night.
"She's reconsidering," the sergeant said. "The chairwoman of the Foundation board called the sheriff at home. So did Mr. Arrington. You're free to go, Miss Ellingwood, but don't leave the county."
Anthony was in the lot, leaning on his car with his coat open and no tie.
He had been there four hours.
He opened the passenger door without a word, and I got in.
The cabin was dark when we reached it, and Edmund had left a lamp on in the kitchen and a note on the table: Gone to town. Bolt the door.
Anthony bolted it.
We stood on either side of the little room, and neither of us said anything for a while.
"I'm not going to forgive you tonight," I said.
"I haven't asked."
"You waited five weeks."
"I did."
"I'm still angry about that."
"I know."
"I also want you to stay."
His shoulders came down.
"Then I'll stay," he said. "On the floor. On the couch. Wherever you say."
