Chapter 4: The Eulogy
They held my memorial on a Saturday at St. Alban's, with white lilies and a closed casket that held nothing.
I sat in the last pew in a black wool coat and a short veil, with Edmund on my left.
Nobody looked twice at either of us.
Three hundred people had come.
I saw the charge nurse from my ER row, still in the cardigan she wore on night shift, with her fist against her mouth.
Two of the paramedics I worked with sat behind her and didn't speak.
Nobody had ever told me they would come.
"You should not be crying," Edmund murmured. "The veil's for hiding, not for use."
"I'm not crying."
He passed me a handkerchief, and I used it.
The priest read the psalm.
Constance Kensington sat in the front pew with her back straight and her eyes dry.
Anthony sat beside her in a black suit, bent forward with his hands locked between his knees.
He had not shaved.
He did not look at the flowers or the people, only at the floor.
Then my sister walked to the lectern in a black dress and a single pearl, and the whole church went quiet for her.
She laid a folded paper down, and did not look at it.
"My sister Ciara was the cleverest person I ever knew," Camille said, and her voice shook exactly where it should.
"She was also the loneliest. After our mother died, she held on to one story, and she held on to it so hard that it hurt her."
Somebody in the pews sniffed.
"She believed that she was the one who saved the man I love. She believed it with her whole heart. She told it to anyone who would listen, and when we couldn't agree, it made her sad and angry with me."
