Chapter 17: The Corridor
"February third," Colin said, as if the date might change if he said it enough.
"That's a long way off," Angie said.
"It's ten weeks."
"Then it's a short way."
He let out a breath that was nearly a laugh.
"I'm going to go and find the surgeon's office," he said. "I'll be five minutes. Don't let her do anything stupid."
"She's in a hospital bed," Dixon said.
"I know my sister."
He went out.
Two minutes later, the door opened again, and he was back, very pale.
"Dad's in the corridor," he said.
Angie sat up.
"What does he want?"
"I don't know. He won't leave."
"He's stood by the nurses' station for twenty minutes. They won't call security, because he donated a wing."
"Tell him to go."
"I did."
"Then I'll tell him."
"Angie, you've got a drip."
"I have a pole with wheels," she said, and swung her legs off the bed. "Dixon, my sweater."
She went out into the corridor with her hand on the pole.
Colin walked at her left shoulder, not touching her, and Dixon at her right.
