Chapter 4: Friday at Five

At four fifty-five on Friday, a blue pickup parked across from the Boswell house with a man in it wearing a grey knit hat.

Angie saw it from the front walk and almost laughed.

She rang the bell, though she had a key.

Delaney opened the door.

She wore a cream dress and a soft, sorry face, and she took a step back.

"Come in," Delaney said. "I told Gerald we should let you pack in peace."

"That was nice of you."

"I want us to be okay."

"I'm sure you do."

Gerald stood at the foot of the stairs with his arms folded.

Colin was in the doorway of the study, one hand on the frame.

Neither of them said hello.

"Your things are in the hall," her father said. "The housekeeper boxed what she could."

"I'd like to pack my own room."

"It's been done."

It had.

Three cardboard boxes and two black trash bags sat by the coat closet, with her winter boots on top.

Someone had tossed her books in loose.

"The bags are for clothes?" Angie asked.

"They were the fastest thing."

She knelt and began to lift her clothes out of the bags one at a time and fold them into the suitcase.

Nobody helped.

The silence stretched until Delaney filled it.

"I really did think about it," she said, brightly. "About the box, I mean. I thought maybe you were upset about your birthday, and that's why you grabbed it. I'm not angry."

Angie went on folding.

"Just say you're sorry, Angie," Delaney said. "That's all your father wants. One sentence."

"I didn't grab it."

"See?" Delaney said to the room, sadly.
