Chapter 22: The Offer

I went to see him on the fourth day.

The attorney general's office asked me to, and Evan asked me not to, and in the end I went because I wanted to.

The county jail visiting room had a table bolted to the floor and a camera in the corner with its red light on.

Evan sat on one side of me, and the man from the attorney general's office stood against the wall.

Blaine came in with a deputy on each arm.

They had taken the beard.

Without it, and without the glasses, he was the man I had married, a little heavier and a lot grayer.

His wrists were chained to a ring on the table.

He looked at me for a long time.

"Leah," he said.

It was his own voice, the warm one, with no baritone built on top of it.

I had not heard it in seven years, and for a moment my stomach turned.

"You look well," he said.

"I'm alive."

"Yes." He smiled slightly. "You always did surprise me."

"You asked for me."

"I did."

"Say what you want."

He glanced at the man by the wall, and at the red light.

"I'm told the state can't take my life if I plead to everything," he said. "In this state, a man who confesses can have a life term. I'd like that in writing."

"That's not up to me."

"It's up to what you say to them." He leaned forward as far as the chain allowed. "I'll tell them everything about yours and Dorrie's. Every date. The dentists, the dummy company, the post office box. All of it, signed. And you tell them that's enough."
