Trina played it for us standing up, with her parka dripping onto the cabin floor.
"I rode back to the post on the ATV for supplies," she said.
"Then I saw the colonel's lights on, so I hid in his coat closet. I know where everyone hides everything."
"Trina," Forrest said.
"Just listen."
She set the phone on the table and pressed play.
Strake's soft voice came out of the speaker first.
"Dalton and the girl are gone, Myrna. I've lost a transport and three of your men."
Fenn answered, unruffled.
"You will find them. The contract specifies delivery of both subjects by the end of the month."
"The contract also specifies a controlled environment. Four hundred cadets are not a controlled environment."
"They are exactly what you sold me, Edwin.
"Four hundred healthy teenagers under daily contact, and a handler who was never going to report what he saw."
Trina's hand tightened on mine.
I stood very still.
"The Talmadge boy was an unfortunate variable," Strake said. "A senator's son. I had to tell the story that he slipped."
