Chapter 23: Graduation
The board cut the term short and held the seniors' commencement early, because half the parents wanted their children out of that building.
It was the second week of December, bright and bitterly cold.
Four hundred cadets stood on the parade field in their grey dress uniforms, and the bleachers behind them were full.
A new commandant stood on the reviewing stand where Strake had stood, a plain woman with a quiet voice.
She read the names in alphabetical order.
I stood in the line of seniors with my hands in my gloves and my diploma not yet in them.
"Hargett, Mara."
I walked.
I walked from the end of the row to the stage, every eye in the hall on me.
Nobody had ever clapped for me.
The clapping started at the back, slow and uneven, and I thought at first that it was the wind.
Then it rolled forward row by row.
The girl who had shouted on the field was clapping hardest of all.
She was the one who had stood right there and seen the glove torn.
