Chapter 16: The Ridge

Torren came up behind me, buckling his sword belt with one hand.

"Get back inside," he said.

"No."

"He has a thousand lances."

"And you have a hole in your side," I said. "Which of us do you think he'll listen to?"

I took the sealed packet from the courier and the paper from my sleeve.

Then I walked down the slope, alone, and stopped in the grass between the two lines.

Torren's guards stood on one side with their torches burned to stubs.

The southern riders stood on the other, stirring their wyverns, with their lances pointing at the sky.

Rosamund's brother reined in his iron-colored beast twenty paces from me.

"Move aside, witch," he said. "I am here for my sister."

"Your sister sent you a letter," I said. "She wrote it in her own hand."

I held it up.

"I'll read it so your riders can hear."

"You will not."

"Then you read it."

He stared at the paper, and at me.

His hand came out.

I walked forward and put it into his glove.

He unfolded it with a sneer.
