Chapter 10: Two A.M.

The knock came at two in the morning, three soft raps, then a pause.

I was in my bed with the folder under my pillow, wide awake.

My roommate lifted her head from her own pillow and whispered, "Do not open that."

I looked through the peephole anyway.

Kelsey was standing in the hall in a gray sweatshirt and no makeup.

Her face was swollen from crying, and she was holding a canvas tote bag against her chest with both arms.

I opened the door.

"What do you want?"

"Can I come in?" Her voice cracked on the last word. "Please, Britta. I drove here myself. I left my phone in the car."

My roommate sat up, and I nodded at her to stay.

I let Kelsey in and shut the door.

She stood in the middle of the room, afraid to sit.

"The video's gone," she said. "I took it down. I deleted all of them. People are calling me a thief and a liar, and Dad screamed at me for an hour, and he never screams."

"I know."

"I didn't know it was a secret." She wiped her face with her sleeve. "I thought you knew. He told Brandon and me when we were little, that your mom's money was for the family. I thought you were fine with it."

"For the family."

"That's how he said it."

I sat on the edge of my bed, and she sank onto the desk chair.

"I went to his study after he sent me upstairs," she said. "I wanted to see what the money was. I've never looked at his desk before."
