Chapter 12: Brandon
Dad stared at Brandon for what felt like a full minute.
"Delete that."
"No."
"Brandon, I'm your father."
"I know who you are," Brandon said.
He said it flatly, without any heat, and I realized I had never heard my brother say a sentence to Dad that wasn't a joke.
Dad's hand closed on the truck door.
Then he looked at the students on the lawn, the phones, the jogger who still hadn't left.
He got behind the wheel and slammed the door and drove out of the parking lot, leaving Brandon in the road with his duffel bag.
"Well," Brandon said. "That's my ride."
We ended up at the diner on Cutler Street, in a back booth under a cracked plastic menu board.
Kelsey had refused to come.
She said she wasn't ready to look at me in daylight.
I had the red notebook in my bag now, and I kept one hand on it under the table.
Brandon ordered black coffee and then didn't drink it.
"I need to tell you something, and you're not going to like how it sounds."
"Okay."
"I knew."
I waited.
"I was seventeen," he said. "I went into the study to get a stamp, and I opened the wrong drawer. There were bank statements. They said KH Fund. I thought it was Mom's savings."
"Karin's," I said. "Our mother's."
"Yeah." He flinched. "I asked Dad about it that night. He said it was a family fund, that it would pay for my tuition and the house and anything we wanted, and that you didn't need any of it because Grandma looked after you for free."
