Chapter 9: Brody Begs

Dylan climbed back into the boat dripping and furious.

"What the hell was that?" he said.

Wyatt had his shorts on and his shirt in his lap.

I had my towel around me, and my hair in a knot.

"Seasick," I said. "He turned green. I held his head over the side."

"Seasick."

"Anchored in a cove with no waves," Brody said, from the water, in a voice full of glee.

"Shut up, Brody."

"It happens," Tate said.

He pulled himself up the ladder, water running off his shoulders, and he looked at me and then at Wyatt and said nothing else.

Dylan glared at all three of us.

Then he turned his back and started the engine.

I sat with my eyes on the shore and my pulse going quick.

Dylan didn't know.

Somebody did, though.

Brody sat across from me the whole ride in, dripping, with a smile he didn't bother to hide.

At the dock, Dylan tossed the keys to Brody.

"Return it. His brother's in the office. Meet us at the truck."

"I'll help," I said.

Dylan frowned. "Why?"

"Because I'm not carrying the cooler."

He looked at me for a long moment, and then he picked up the cooler himself.

Brody and I walked down the dock side by side, in the hot afternoon, with gulls on the pilings.

Around the end, behind the boathouse, where the planks ran out of sight, I stopped.

"Okay," Brody said, grinning. "Go ahead. I'm listening."

"You saw."

"I saw a boat rock for a long time." He leaned on the wall. "I also saw the way your face looked when you got out. And I heard you. Not words. You know."

"I know."

"So Wyatt was seasick." He tipped his head. "And I'm betting you didn't just wake up this morning with a new taste."
