Chapter 11: Face to Face

The red moon rose over the Abyss and shone through the window onto the bed.

Qinghe lay on her side with her back against Jinye's chest, wrapped in his arm.

Neither of them had slept.

His breath moved the hair at her neck, and his palm lay flat on her stomach, warm and heavy.

"Tell me something," she said.

"Anything."

"What was it like? Waking up here, three hundred years ago."

His hand went still.

She felt him think about it, and felt the pale seam against her shoulder blade.

"I woke in a pool of black water at the bottom of the Abyss," he said.

"It was the middle of the day, and the sky above me was red."

His thumb moved on her stomach.

"I was a grown man, naked, and I had no name."

"None?"

"None. I didn't know what I was, or where."

He breathed out.

"Chi Wen found me an hour later, and I gave him a single name."

"What name?"

"Qinghe."

She turned her head on the pillow.

His eyes were open, amber in the moonlight, and he was not smiling.

"It was the only thing I knew," he said.

"I didn't know your face. I didn't know who you were."

His voice dropped.

"I only knew it was the most important name in the world, and that I had to keep it safe."

"Jinye."

"The Elders said I was the lake's gift, the next Emperor."
