Chapter 20: Hua Yuruo Falls
Hua Yuruo stood alone in the middle of the Hall of Radiance, in plain rose silk with no combs in her hair.
She held a single sheet of yellow paper in both hands.
Nine thousand immortals watched her from the pillars.
Qinghe stood at the foot of the dais, with Jinye behind her left shoulder and Chi Wen at his right.
"My lords," said Yuruo, in a high clear voice. "I have a page from the Register of Names."
She held it up.
"It was cut from the scroll after the old registrar read it before the Mirror."
"The Demon Emperor's line was never written by the Pen. It was added in the Abyss by a demon hand."
A murmur ran around the hall.
"If this is true," Yuruo said, her voice cracking with triumph, "then the decree must stand."
"The heart must go home."
The old registrar had come in behind Qinghe without a sound.
He took the page from the guard's hand, held it to the light, and sniffed it.
"This is very good paper," he said.
"What do you mean?"
"It is paper from the Flower Court's own mills. The Register is made of silk." He turned it over. "And the ink is cold."
"Ink is ink."
"Heaven Pen's ink is warm for a year after it is written. It never cools. Your Majesty may touch the Register to see."
He laid his hand flat on the great scroll in its case and held it out to the Emperor's steward.
The steward touched the scroll, and then the page, and his face changed.
"The Register is warm," he said. "This page is cold as a stone."
Yuruo went white.
