Chapter 24: Kneel
Qinghe woke at dawn with her husband's arm over her stomach and the cord still knotted around both their wrists.
The hundred lamps had burned out in the night.
Gray light came through the high windows and lay across the white silk in long bars.
Jinye was awake.
He lay on his side with his head propped on his free hand, looking at her.
He had plainly been doing it for some time.
"How long?" she said, hoarse.
"Since the third bell."
"That's unsettling."
"I know. I'm very sorry. I couldn't stop."
She turned over to face him.
His hair was a mess, the copper in it bright against the white, and the gold mark showed on his neck above the sheet.
There was a crease on his cheek from the pillow.
She had never seen anything so ridiculous or so dear.
"I'm going to wash," she said.
"I'll carry you."
"I can walk."
"I know you can. Let me carry you anyway."
She thought about it, and then she put her arm around his neck.
He picked her up off the bed, with the cord looped between them, and walked her into the bathing room.
It was a small round room with a floor of warm black stone and a copper tub sunk into the middle of it.
The water was already steaming.
A servant had left it, with an oil lamp, a folded towel and a tray of small things.
No one had been seen since.
Jinye climbed into the tub with her in his arms and sat down in the hot water with her back against his chest.
She let out a long groan.
Her whole body ached, pleasantly and deeply, in places that she had not known could ache.
"Oh, that's good."
"Better than the Ember Pool?"
