Chapter 13: Not Yet

I did not say a word into the phone.

My mother had both hands pressed over her mouth.

"Del?" the man said. "Are you there?"

He waited, and I held my breath and let him fill the quiet.

"If the cat story didn't work, that's your problem. I told you what to do."

His voice had no fear in it, only irritation.

"Come to the marina tonight, nine o'clock, the restaurant at the end of the pier. Bring next week's shipment list or don't bother."

He hung up.

I had recorded all of it.

Mom made a sound I had never heard from her, low and animal.

"I'm going home," she said. She was already on her feet. "I'm going to drag her out of her bed by her hair."

"Sit down."

"Nerina..."

"Mom, sit down. If you scream at her tonight, she burns every page. She cries, Dad takes her side, and the man at the marina never hears her name again."

She stayed standing, shaking.

"Then what do I do?"

"You go home. You give her dinner. You tell her nothing."

"I can't look at her."

"You looked at her for a year and didn't see her," I said. "You can do it for one more night."

It was cruel, and she took it without flinching.

She sat down slowly.

"And tonight, when she asks for the car, you give her the keys. You let her walk out."

"You want me to let her go to him."

"I want her where I can see her."

My mother wiped her face with the heel of her hand.

"All right," she said. "What else?"

I thought about it.

"Nothing else. Take the folder out of this room. I photographed every page."
