Chapter 20: Her Own Door

I took a cab to Bay Ridge with no guard behind me.

The stone house sat dark at the end of its street, and the iron gate stood open.

The grey coats were gone from the walk, and the drive was empty.

He had done exactly what I asked.

I rang the bell, and I heard his steps in the hall before the door opened.

Raimondo stood there in his shirt sleeves with his collar undone.

He looked at the street behind me, and then at me.

"There's nobody out here," he said.

"I know. I told you to send them home."

"You have no protection."

"I have a gun in my bag and a brother on speed dial," I said. "And I have you, if you'll let me in."

He did not move.

"Ask me," I said.

"Ask you what?"

"Why I'm here. It's day four. You get a question, and I owe you an answer."

His grey eyes held mine.

"Why are you here?"

"Because the treaty is dead," I said. "Because nobody owns me, and nobody's guarding me, and I still walked across the city to your door."

His breath went out of him.

"I thought you only stayed because you needed a wall," he said. "I thought if I took the wall away, you'd go."

"I'm standing in your doorway. Does that look like going?"

He took one step and put both hands on my face.

"No," he said, roughly. "It doesn't."

I pulled him down by the collar and kissed him.

He kissed me back hard, with his hand tangled in my hair and the door still open behind me.

He kicked it shut.

He pushed me against it and ground his hips into me, and I felt his cock thick and hard through his trousers.

"I'm still angry at you," I said into his mouth.
