Chapter 8: Closed Since March

Raimondo Corvi lived in a stone house in Bay Ridge, behind an iron gate and a lawn nobody walked on.

He gave me a room on the second floor with a lock on the inside.

At eleven-thirty I was still sitting on the bed in my clothes, with the recording of my brothers on my phone.

A knock came at the door.

"Your question is still open," Raimondo said through the wood. "It's almost midnight."

I opened it.

He stood in the hall with his coat off and his sleeves turned back, and he looked more tired than he had at the dock.

"The treaty," I said. "What does it say?"

His phone buzzed in his hand.

He read the screen, and his face went still.

"It will have to wait ten minutes," he said. "Your sister is at my gate."

I followed him downstairs.

A car waited outside the iron bars with its headlights on.

Delfina stood in front of it in a cream coat, with a pet carrier held against her chest.

Six of Raimondo's men stood on the lawn and watched her.

She saw me on the step, and her face crumpled.

"Nerina! Thank God. I've been looking everywhere."

"How did you know where I was?" I asked.

She blinked.

"Tullio said you went with a man in a dark coat. I only wanted to say I'm sorry."

"I brought King." She lifted the carrier. "I thought if you saw him, you'd remember how much I loved you."

"I didn't know you loved me," I said.

Her lip shook.

"Please don't be cruel. I only want my sister back."

"Then tell me the name of the vet you took King to."
